Location and Population

The city of Tarim is considered to be one of the most important cities in the Hadhramout province. It is located on the left bank of the main pathway of the Hadhramout valley, about 34 Kilometers from the city of Seyoun and 356 Kilometers from the capital city of the province, Mukallah. Its size is 2894 Square meters and its population is more than 100 000 people.

Name and Establishment

The city of Tarim was named after its founder, Tarim binHadhramout bin Saba’.It was the capital city of the Kinda kings and it remained the capital of the province until the 10th century.
There are different opinions recorded in history regarding its establishment date, some stating that its establishment dates back to 400 years before the birth of Jesus (PBUH), whilst another opinion states that it was established in the time of the ruler Alhimyari Assad Alkamaal. The city of Tarim is also known as Alghanna, due to the many beautiful gardens found therein.

Arrival of Islam

The people of Tarim specifically and Hadhramout province in general,entered Islam voluntarily in the very early days of the arrival of the religion of Islam,thereafter, delegations went to the city of Medina, to visit the Messenger (SAW), to inform him about their acceptance of Islam.

Long standing countries take apride in their culture, which is connected to apastconfirming its strength and deep roots. Tarim has a rich culture consisting of customs, traditions, laws, traditional dances and plays, which all give an impression of a long lasting culturewhich is still found until today. At the forefront of all of these arts, isthe art of Dan, which is related to song rhythms and religious poetry.Amongst the dances which are excellently performed by the people of Tarim are the ‘Zarbaadi dance’, Shabwani dance’ as well as ‘The Razeeh dance’.
Many traditional activities take place in this ancient city and the most distinct of suchactivities is the camel racing which takes place annually on the 13th of Sha’baan, upon the return of the people and thecamel riders, from the group visitationof the grave of Prophet Hud. (PBUH)

Tarim is distinguished from the other cities within Hadhramout, as far as its economical activity is concerned, in areas such as farming, construction, handicrafts and trade,however, some of its residents are government employees whereas others travel to other countries to seek employment. The people of Tarim are famous in terms of their many trades which they engage in, which require high expertise acquired through means of inheritance from generation to generation and from father to son, such as: producing building material, iron smiting, welding, carpentry, pottery and many more.

Tarim is distinct for its social and community structure. In the market places there are many quality local products.From among such market places are:
– The medicine and perfume market place.
– The seeds and spices market place.
– The locally produced clothing market place.
During the week various small market stalls are arranged, where household items and other goods are sold, which is a popular event where both the locals as well as people from outside of Tarim, participate in selling and buying.
The people of Tarim are renowned for their expertise and their local produces are a testament of this, such as their products made of clay and date palms. It is also home to fine honey, black seeds and Henna (a reddish-orange cosmetic gained from leaves and stalks of the henna plant).
