The Clay Castles

Not only is Tarim known for its knowledge, people of knowledge and Masjid but also for its castles which total up to around 20 found in and around the city and from the well known ones are:

Al-Rinad Castle (Al-Rinad Fortress)

It is situated in the middle of the city and is said to have been built before the birth of Jesus (PBUH) and has undergone many renovations, the most recent of such being in 1352(H). It was designed by the architect Alawi bin Abi Bakr Alkhaaf and is now used as an office for the local authorities and Ministry of Culture and the printing centre of Alahkaf.

Goba castle

It has a very beautiful and unique dome to it and is situated in Aideed,surrounded by gardens as well as swimming pools and was built in 1355 (H) by Habib Muhammad bin Hassan Bin Sheikh Alkhaaf. It was designed by the architect Alawi bin Abi Bakr Alkaff.

Habib Abdu Rahman bin Sheikh Alkaaf castle

It is situated in Aideed and was built in 1357 (H) by Habib Abdu Rahman bin Sheikh Alkaaf. It was designed by the architect Alawi bin Abi Bakr Alkaff. Some of the building has begun to fall apart.

Dar Al Salaam castle

It is situated in Almuhaydara and was built in 1375 (H) by Habib Muhammad bin Hassan Bin Sheikh Alkaff. It has a very distinct design and door to it.

Hamtoot castle

It is situated in Almuhaydara next to the Dar al-Salaam castle and was built in 1330 (H) by Habib Muhammad bin Hassan Bin Sheikh Alkaff. It has a swimming pool in it and has a mixture of Hadhramout design with East Asian design.

I’sha castle

It is situated in Almuhaydara and was built in 1339 (H) by Habib Muhammad bin Hassan Bin Sheikh Alkaff. It has a very distinct style to it and is a unique work of art.

It is situated in the market place and was built in the first half of the 14th century (H) by Habib Umar bin Sheikh Alkhaaf. It was designed by the architect Alawi bin Abi Bakr Alkhaaf and has a very distinct style to it.

Salmanah castle

It is situated in Almajf and was built in the first half of the 14th century (H) by Habib Muhammad bin Hassan Bin Sheikh Alkaaf.

Al-khudaib castle

It was built and designed by the architect Alawi bin Abi Bakr Alkaaf in the 14th century and has a very distinct style to it and is made of mud.
